In the five stories in this collection, we follow the life of the main character, Celeste, through various ages and stages of her life.
The opening story, "Something of Substance," is a coming-of-age tale. "The Sheets" paints a chilling picture of how Celeste deals (or doesn't deal) with her abusive marriage. In "An Honest Woman," Celeste looks for satisfaction in the arms of a younger lover and finds something she didn't anticipate. Celeste struggles to find herself in "Cowboys." In "Intervention," the final story in the collection, Celeste suffers the one loss she can't endure.
Moore is a talented, award-winning author whose short fiction has been published in many outstanding magazines.

I found these stories were well-written, and what we saw of Celeste's character came through strong. Each story worked alone, but taken as a whole they show the arc of her life, from a little girl looking for her place in the world, to a woman finally dealing with her abusive husband.The only fault I find with these is that I don't think we saw enough of that arc. I would've liked to have know how Celeste met John and what their early relationship was like. I wanted to see more of her love of water, nature, and horses, and how that shaped her choices in life.
I think the author could easily turn these stories into a novel, if she wanted.

I really thought I would like this as they were key events in the life of the main character, Celeste. However, I couldn't make a connection with her. I didn't like her, I didn't like the choices she made, I didn't like very much about the story line. What I do like is that it had been edited & not riddled with typos like a lot of books are. And I was determined to read it to the end to find something redemptive or endearing. So thankful that it was only 48 pages!
Disappointment about the choices she made in life, so little happiness.
Inge took me to unexpected places in her collection of short stories! She introduces us to Celeste, an interesting character we get to know better as we journey with her. Inge's descriptions are vivid and bring the reader into the scenes very effectively. We also are able to empathize with the feeling of the character, feelings not uncommon for many of us. (And, as a former horse owner, i loved her chapter on Cowboys where she introduces us to a magnificent animal!) a good read, worth your time!
