Julia Broeder is only six months shy of graduating from the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania when one small decision spirals out of control and results in her expulsion. Hoping to travel the world as a missionary doctor, her only choice is to return back home . . . or throw herself upon the mercy of Ashton Carlyle.
Formal and straight-laced, Ashton is not pleased to see an expelled Julia arrive at his Manhattan office. His position as an attorney for the Vandermark family's world-famous shipping empire entails taking care of the Broeders, longtime employees of the Vandermarks. But Ashton has no intention of using his employer's resources in defense of Julia's impulsive and reckless actions.
What Ashton does not expect are a scathing reprimand from none other than the Vandermark family patriarch and the bewildering resistance from Julia herself when he's forced to change his tune. At an impasse, Ashton and Julia are unprepared for the revelations that arise or the adventure that awaits them.
In this novella, award-winning novelist Elizabeth Camden introduces readers to the world of the grand Hudson River Valley estate Dierenpark and the enigmatic Vandermark family. Includes an extended preview of Until the Dawn, Camden's full-length Dierenpark novel.

"Sometimes ten seconds is all it takes to change the course of a life."Julia Broeder's rash, albeit compassionate decision to save a life, has brought her to this point; waiting nervously outside the conference room at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania, while twelve people determine the course of her future. Would she finish her final semester and sail towards her dream of medical missions, or would she be banished back to her former life on the grounds of a vast estate, with only goats as patients?
It seems that God will provide an unlikely ally; a young attorney who sees Julia through the eyes of his own boyhood dreams, as he encourages her to press forward, " This is your first test, there are going to be more, and it's going to be hard . . . . . but I have never seen someone run toward a dream with as much passion as you."
A lovely story with a subtle hint of things to come.

This short, but perfect novella by Elizabeth was a delightful read! I loved that it was a prequel to learning more about the Vandermark family and it was a great lead in.
Julia and Ashton had an interesting relationship so to speak. I felt that their relationship escalated quickly, but that is to be expected in novellas! They did seem like the perfect couple, and I loved the way that Ashton went to down to Julia’s level (social class speaking), yet still encouraged her to rise up and pursue her dreams. He was right there to help her along the way, and once Julia realized that, she too, opened her arms and heart.
PLUS it’s FREE on !! Don’t miss this wonderful story of love, dreams, and sacrifice!

Until the Dawn
From This Moment
The Lady of Bolton Hill
After Julia gets thrown out of medical school for stealing a dog that she had healed , she goes to the attorney that controls the estate that her family has lived on forever. Ashton can't believe that she threw away her opportunity to become a doctor after all he did to make sure that her schooling was provided for, and therefore refuses to help her. So she returns home to find that there is no room for her anymore in the little cabin with her brother and his set of twins. She decides to assist the neighbor with his goat farm and the birthing of tons of baby goats, this is where Ashton finds her when he is sent to retrieve her. Is it possible that she will refuse to go back to medical school and become a vet? Will they be able to deny the growing feelings they have for one another? Will Ashton lose his job if she doesn't go back to school?
This was a sweet historical romance novella that has brought back the struggles of a bygone era of few female doctors and the stringent rules that they had to abide by. It also brought the story of Ashton the attorney and his struggle to become more than just an attorney in the forefront of the Industrial Revolution.
Elizabeth Camden has written another interesting historical novel (or, novella) giving the reader insight into the time like few other authors can. She is so skilled at finding an interesting story to tell (in this case, the main character, Julia, is a student at a women's medical college in the late 1800s) that we may never have thought of before.
Although I enjoyed the story, Toward the Sunrise felt very rushed at the end. Julia gets expelled from her school within the first few pages of the book, and must face her fears of and hopes for the future and face the stern Dean of Students. But, before this happens, she births more than one hundred baby goats. This takes the better part of 2 weeks in her life, and the better part of 1/2 the book.
Then - zoom! Graduation, marriage, bam! I'm not sure why the author and publishers thought a novella was the best format for this story, but in my opinion, it deserved a full-length read.
I've given it 3 stars, because Camden's skill at setting a scene and drawing up characters is, as always, excellent. This book could have gotten more if it had been more fleshed out.
Also, a minor point, but at 67% on my the story ended, and the next 33% was 3 pages appearing OVER and OVER and OVER again. Just a glitch in the software, I'm sure, but the promised sneak-peak into Camden's next book in the series only provided page 1. That is a very short sneak peak!
even for a novella. Thankfully, Elizabeth Camden did craft a complete short story out of “Toward the Sunrise”. The version ends 66% thru the download with the last 34% being devoted to the first few chapters of the 1st full novel, “Until the Dawn”. I didn’t read that part preferring to read it with the rest of the book, later.
Camden is a great writer. Her history is on point, characters are interesting with realistic dialogue and interactions, and the descriptions of time and place are enveloping. You’ll be pulled into the story, as well as smell and feel things along with the characters. I would have loved for this story to continue on as I liked these two main characters and the tho’t of a woman MD as a missionary in the late 1800’s in the Far East would make for a great story. However, it looks as if the next book is headed in a different direction. Time to hit the download button and see!
